The Artist Practice of Carl Andre.
Carl Andre's use of material and form has been the source of influence towards my recent exploration of sculpture. However, unlike Carl Andre's use of ready-made units and use of others for their fabrication skills, my intention has been to revisit my prior woodwork experience and to try construct my ideas on my own.
Using my drawings and digital renders as reference I have been able to construct my minimal geometric 'structures' from wooden posts sourced locally, and also introduce prior skills into my practice. These prior skills/techniques (used 5-6 years ago) include belt sanding, hand sanding, cutting with a chop saw, making a clamping jig, working with hand tools and working from detailed drawings to create 'real objects'.
The below Images show one my geometric 'structures' just before being glued and secured in the clamping jig, and also just after being taken out of it fully constructed.
These other images show it after the process of filler and belt sanding for a smooth finish.
