Own Practice: 2ft x 2ft MDF Board - Two Blue Stripes.

After finishing another 2ft x 2ft MDF Board yesterday using Green and Reflective Yellow Vinyl Tape. My intention today in the studio was to revisit the shape of a square, but this time try and achieve a composition that plays with the illusion of depth and layers.

By applying the stripes from the corners inwards, my aim was to draw the focus towards the centre of the board (revisiting the idea I used when creating the Green and Reflective Yellow piece). However, this time I wanted to remove the concept of a continuous line to guide your focus and instead introduce a rotated red square which would keep your focus central. By overlapping this square on top of Two Blue Parallel stripes, I wanted to create a contrast of colours, which would isolate the black and white design I have placed between them.

My reasoning behind alternating the directional stripes surrounding the red square, to then horizontal stripes on the inside, was to try and gain a sense of separation between the two areas. This separation has now allowed me to create two grounds of space which together give a sense of depth. Whilst achieving this depth, the Two Blue stripes cross under this red square division and by doing so slightly blur the boundaries. This has therefore allowed me to show a subtle dimensional illusion which on first glance isn't as apparent, but is later realised after focusing on the piece for a while.

The idea for the Two Blue stripes came from two left over marks on my studio space wall which were the remains of my expressive squeegee pieces. I thought the two marks looked interesting in the way they were parallel to one another, and thought that they would therefore be a good element to use within my Vinyl Tape practice (connecting the two processes).

I enjoy this repetitive process of using Vinyl Tape and the freedom of exploration that comes with it in order to achieve the composition I'm looking for. This ability to use an everyday material to create a composition of directional lines is something I'm going to continue to develop, paying attention to change the scale and the overall complexity involved. Each piece I've done so far has required new creative challenges to be overcame in order to achieve the look I'm looking for, and this one was no different. A new approach was needed to create the central perspective of black and white and I feel it was successful in the end.
