Own Practice: 2ft x 2ft Vinyl Tape Board, Green and Reflective Yellow.

Today I decided to have a break from using the squeegee technique and the expressive mark making it achieves and reverted back to my process of using Vinyl Tape.

I spent this afternoon creating a piece from a coloured tape I'd previously used before (Green) and also a new roll of tape that I hadn't yet used (reflective yellow). The way in which I approached it was with the same idea as before, trying to show a mix of directional lines which are all segmented by the use of one continuous line. When I started I had no design in mind and I purely used each application of tape as an influence for where the next one/s would go.

I used my previous 2ft x 2ft and 4ft x 4ft boards (red, black, silver, white) as a visual reference but I was keen to use the strips of tape to try and include some sort of shape within this new piece I was doing.

The placement of the Vinyl Tape that I went with shows a combination of directional lines that together draw your focus towards the centre of the board and the outline of a rotated square. The continuous yellow line is what ties the multiple areas of directional tape together by dissecting and segmenting them at various points. My intention by doing this was to make the centre the main focal point of the piece and to use the yellow reflective line as the aspect that directs your focus around the other parts of composition (either taking your focus in towards the centre, or out towards the sides)which shows movement within the piece.

The inclusion of the square shape was a subtle way of referring to the material and shape I was working with in terms of the MDF board.

By using this new yellow reflective tape that I have purchased from the internet alongside my usual glossy Vinyl Tape, it has allowed me to create a look that changes with the light. This use of light to create a reflective shine will bring a sense of movement to the piece that requires the viewer to change the position to which they are standing.

My aim with every Vinyl Tape piece I create is to learn from each piece and with this knowledge introduce new elements of design within each one that follow. I have another 2ft x 2ft MDF Board already cut down to size from when I got this one cut, so I my aim is to produce something which visually looks different to all my prior pieces.
