Own Practice: Expressive Squeegee Technique.

Throughout my studio work so far, which has been focusing upon my interest of (Abstraction, Line, Repetition, Colour, Movement and Depth) it has been mostly communicated in the form of India Ink, Digital Prints, Vinyl Tape and most recently Acrylic + Vinyl Tape on MDF.
Following on from prior use of a window squeegee to apply acrylic paint to Two MDF boards and seeing the effects It allowed me to create on the surface, I decided I would use the process again but this time on paper.
As this technique is still new to my practice and also a step out of my comfort zone I decided I would embrace this and also use paper that is to a larger scale than what I would normally work on.

Above is the result/outcome of my first attempt. My aim with this piece was purely to determine and work out a process/method that gave me the knowledge of how horizontal and vertical marks could be applied individually to the page but would together create a layered composition that expressed depth. I paid close attention to how each of the individual marks contrasted one another and how my use of primary colours combined for an overall pleasing composition. During the process I felt that it was missing something and needed some aspect of texture within the piece. I therefore decided to 'test out' using bubble wrap and corrugated cardboard as a way to print sections of texture/pattern. This introduction has allowed me to add another layer of movement within the piece that compliments and works together with the coloured layers beneath to guide your focus around the piece.
As a result of this 'experimental' piece I have gained the knowledge about the process of using a squeegee as a technique of applying acrylic and subsequently I have gone onto create more pieces that I feel offer a more complex composition and also communicate a sense of repetition.

As the physical motion of applying the acrylic paint with a window squeegee is repetitive, I had the idea to use this repetition and continuation of vertical marks as a way to try and replicate/communicate the visual motion of heavy raindrops running down a window. My aim was to create an abstract representation and after looking at my finished piece I feel that I have managed to show my idea the way I visualised it whilst still allowing the viewer room to determine their own interpretation from it.

In conclusion, my aim from this point onwards is to continue with this expressive technique alongside my more controlled Vinyl Tape pieces to see where both pathways lead and what can be produced...............
