Experimentation of Both White Vinyl Tape and Acrylic Paint on MDF Boards.

This is my first attempt at experimenting with both Vinyl Tape and Acrylic Tape together. My aim was to try and use the process of tape (which up to this point has been very precise and geometric in formation) and try and merge it with acrylic paint in order to create some more expressive pieces.

I started each piece by placing strips of white tape across the boards in a way that I found was compositionally pleasing to the eye. Once I was happy with the placement I began using a window squeegee to drag Red, Yellow and Blue paint across the top of the surface of MDF. Paying attention to work both horizontally and vertically.

This method of working and the idea of introducing a squeegee initially has came from seeing an image on Pinterest. (shown below).

The way in which the paint is dragged across the surface and the effect it created visually appealed to me.

After testing the technique out I have realised that the amount of pressure you use when dragging the squeegee and the placement of the paint underneath it works together in terms of what mark is achieved. Whilst I was stepping out of my comfort zone I decided I may as well 'test out' and incorporate other textures on the surface of the MDF and used corrugated cardboard and bubble wrap to print white paint. This approached produced line and circular pattern effects that allowed me to play with directional marks and as a result added a variation between the overall composition of each piece.

At this point I then left them to dry (which wasn't long as the paint was in thin layers) and then I proceeded to use a Pallet Knife to scrape/scratch away the dry paint that covered the white tape as a way of revealing it from beneath the layers of paint. The marks achieved during the process introduced more expressive marks and texture that as a result contrast the white.

My aim now is to produce more work in the studio that uses these techniques and materials.
